つぼみが橋や寺社の欄干に取り付けられる玉ねぎを逆さまにしたような装飾物の擬宝珠に似ていることに由来します。ユリのように優雅な花で日陰でもよく育ちます。食用では山菜として若芽、若葉などが利用され、噛むと少しぬめりがあります　。花言葉は「沈静」

Plantain lily

The name derived from the bud that resembles an artificial gem like an upside-down onion attached to a parapet of a temple or shrine. The flower is elegant like lilies and it grows well in the shade. Young sprouts and young leaves are used as wild vegetables and have slimy texture. The flower message is "calmness".
