ハマユウ Crinum

ハマユウ 

その白い花が神事で利用される楮の木の皮を細く裂いた繊維から作った白い布を垂らしたようであることから名づけられました。花言葉の「どこか遠くへ」は、コルク質の種皮に覆われたタネが海流によって広がったと考えられていることにちなみます。主に温暖な海浜で見られる海浜植物で、種子は海上を何ヶ月も生きたまま漂流する能力があり、海岸に漂着してから砂や砂礫の上で発芽し、雨が降って周囲に水が供給されたときに速やかに根を伸ばすものと考えられていますが、水がなくても発芽し、机の上などに放置した状態でも発芽します。リコリンというアルカロイドを偽茎に多く含み、食べると吐き気や下痢を催します。花は日没前後から強い芳香を発するようになります。

Crinum

The name comes from its white flower which appears to have fallen a white cloth made of fiber that is finely ripped from the persimmon tree skin used in the ritual. The flower message "travel somewhere far" means the seeds covered with cork seed coat are thought to be spreaded by the ocean current. It is a beach plant mainly found on a warm beach and the seeds have the ability to drift alive in the sea for many months then germinate on sand when washed ashore and grows roots quickly when it rains and water is supplied to the ground. It also germinate when left on a desk without water. It contains many alkaloids called lycorine in the pseudostem and causes nausea and diarrhea when eaten. The flower gives strong scent around sunset.
