垂れ下がったつぼみが開花直前になると自然に上を向いて膨らみ、夕方に濃厚な甘い芳香を漂わせ、夜の8時頃から咲き始め、午前3～4時頃、夜明けを待たずにしぼんでしまいます。夜に開花する理由は、原産地メキシコ熱帯雨林地帯において、花蜜食・花粉食の小型コウモリがやや下を向き、舌を伸ばして花蜜と花粉を摂食し、媒介として受粉できるように適応したと考えられています。花は開花中、開花後ともに食用にでき、咲いている花は焼酎につけると保存できます。花言葉は「はかない美」

The bud hanging down from the stem points upwards and naturally blows up just before blooming, giving a thick sweet aroma late in the afternoon and starts blooming around 8 p.m.and withers around 3 - 4 a.m.before dawn. The night blooming is considered in its origin in rain forest in Mexico, a small nectar-feeding / pollen-feeding bat turns slightly downwards, stretches the tongue to eat flower nectar and pollen and plays a role as a mediator to pollinate. The flowers are edible both during and after blooming and the blooming flowers can be preserved in distilled spirit. The flower message is "the fragile beauty".
