初夏に鮮紅色の花をつけ、果実は秋に熟すと赤く硬い外皮が不規則に裂け、赤く透明な多汁性の果肉の粒が無数に現れます。果汁はジュースとして食用されます。乾燥させた樹皮・果皮または根皮は、生薬として古くから駆虫薬として用いられてきました。花言葉は「円熟した優雅さ」
